To cover or not to cover?

There have been many debates over this question.  Air conditioning units are designed to be installed outdoors and take the abuse that weather dishes out.

  • If you cover the entire unit, it can trap moisture inside, causing a high-humidity environment that the wires, connections, and any circuit boards don’t do well in.
  • Small animals search for protection from the cold winter’s elements. Don’t give them the opportunity to create a home in your AC unit!
  • Most air conditioning manufacturers do not recommend covering the outside unit.

At Central Heating and Air Conditioning, we also feel it is not necessary to cover the unit.  But if you decide you need to, perhaps to keep debris from falling on top of it, simply place a piece of plywood across the top!
